A night in the foaling barn
Cameras, coffee and the quiet hour before dawn: how a foal comes into the world at Orvaine.

Foaling season begins in February and the barn is never empty at night. Mares are watched on camera and by a groom who sleeps a few metres away.
Most mares foal between midnight and four in the morning, quickly and quietly. Our job, almost always, is simply to wait.

“You never stop being moved by the first time a foal stands up.”
