A young black horse cantering loose

A young horse has years ahead of it. The decisions we make at three and four shape everything that follows.

Slowly, then all at once

We start our horses under saddle at three, turn them away for the winter, and bring them back at four. Most do their first small shows at five. By seven, the good ones have told us who they are.
